How to Identify Your Brand Values

Paper with Brand Values Written on It

People don’t just buy from businesses.

They buy from people they know, like and trust. All those things create a connection that is so much deeper than “you have what I’m looking for.”

We’ve been seeing a shift in society within the last 10 years that people want to buy from companies that are doing good in the world and exhibiting what they value front and center. Recently I’ve noticing more businesses (even Whole Foods) proudly displaying their company values in their establishment.

Brand values are guiding principles that help the business make decisions and take action. I like to think of values as ideals and priorities woven into the work.

Showcasing your values is foundational for a brand that knows who are they are and stands for what they believe in. When there is a crossover between what a business values and what a potential client values it creates an immediate connection that increases their likelihood of engaging with the business.

Follow these fun, thought-provoking steps to identify your unique brand values…

step one

Consider your personal values.

When you’re making a choice or approaching a relationship what is most important to you? List out as many as you can think of right now.

step two

What does your ideal client value?

Put yourself in the shoes of your ideal client. What do you think they value right now or they aspire to value in their life?

step Three

Pick 3-5 Brand Values.

As you choose your final brand values take a look at what you value and what your ideal client values. Are there any cross over values? There should be 1-2 of your ideal client’s current or aspirational values in the final list you choose. For each value write a sentence about why this value is important and how it comes through in your work.

Example: Authenticity - I believe in the power of transparency, sincerity, and owning your originality. I respect what makes you unique and make sure to weave that into your brand.

Create a clear vision for your brand

Now that you’ve identified your brand values I recommend sharing them on social media and on your website to clearly display what’s most important to you and how you weave them into your work.

This is one piece of a larger puzzle when it comes to having a clear brand strategy and speaking directly to your ideal client. I offer a Brand Alignment and Strategy coaching package for the business who’s just getting started or at a point of redefinition.
