Social Media Struggles and How to Conquer Them

Almost weekly I hear from business owners how defeating social media feels to them. Some of my clients have even “retired” from Facebook and Instagram because they just don’t want to play that game anymore and know that there’s a more aligned way for them to connect with their ideal clients.

Lately, I’ve been re-framing what it means to be on social media. I choose to see it as an opportunity to grow my reach and connect with people all over the globe!

If you’ve been struggling with social media, then I have a few bits of advice for you…

  • Boundaries.

Create some boundaries around the platform because let’s not forget, it’s designed for addiction. Decide what days of the week and how much time you’ll spend on social media, set a timer to post/engage and then get off that shiz to live your life.

  • Content pillars.

When creating content to post, pick 3-4 topics that are pertinent to your brand and add value for the reader (one of these should be about you/your brand) and then stick to them. When you're questioning what to post these will help you guide the messaging.

  • Plan it out.

One day a week, take a few hours to write out your posts in advance and then use a planning app to post for you. I love using Planoly!

  • Keep it on brand.

Create some graphics in Canva and pick a filter for your photos to create consistency. Need some help creating a few graphic templates? I’d love to help!

  • Call the reader to action!

What do you want them to do? Click the link in your bio, comment with an emoji, answer a question, etc.

  • Use hashtags strategically.

Don’t just hashtag your photos with what you do or what your brand is about. Instead, think about where your ideal clients/customers are hanging out and then use those hashtags. They’re also the ones you should go in and engage with!

  • Engagement.

This is key. You can’t just post and then ideal clients magically appear. It’s more about engagement and spending time on the app - liking and genuinely commenting on photos.

  • Get support.

If you don’t want to do it, hire help!

  • Draw the line.

If social media doesn’t feel good, then please, don’t do it. You didn’t start this business to do things that feel icky and if you’re putting bad energy into it then that surely won’t yield results.

All this to say, social media is still a work in progress for me but these are some things I’ve been working on implementing and I figured they might help you too. If you’re looking for an eye-opening documentary about social media then watch The Social Dilemma on Netflix - it was a new perspective on these “tools”...air quotes for a reason, you’ll see why ;)
